A huge part of truly loving yourself and rebuilding self-respect and self-esteem is letting go of the past. When you start the process, your future will always appear somewhat muted and vague when you allow yourself to be shackled by the past. You have to be strong enough to once and for all bid adieu to all the negative experiences that have hindered the growth of your self worth and confidence. And at the end of the day, when you are able to truly love yourself, you will then be able to love others and allow other to love you.

My personal belief is that happiness starts from within and is projected outward. It transcends the emotions of everyday life. Have you ever noticed that you can tell when a person is truly happy? You don’t know what they are going through in life, but it is evident that they are in high spirits. The same is true with love. You can’t love someone else or allow him or her to love you if you don’t love yourself. All you will do is push people away and it’s not fair to you or to the other people involved.

The one thing that I tell people that I speak to is that you do not owe your happiness to anyone. Also, you can’t depend on someone else to make you happy. You really need to stand on your own two feet and do it on your own. That way, you are not disappointed when the other person can’t deliver.

The bottom line is that we all have debts to pay in life. Just like financial planners tell us, we need to pay ourselves first. So, before you decide that you owe a debt to someone else, make sure that you pay the debts of true happiness and love to yourself first.
